Welsh actor Matthew Rhys made Emmy Awards history by becoming the first person ever to win two lead acting prizes in a single night. He took best lead actor in a limited series for the psychological thriller The Beast In Me and best lead actor in a comedy for Widow's Bay, with previous double nominees having failed to achieve the same feat. Accepting his second award, Rhys dedicated it to "the great and good people of Wales", calling it a moment for a "small but mighty nation" to punch above its weight.

The wider ceremony also produced notable milestones: Jean Smart and Allison Janney each picked up their eighth career Emmy, equalling the record for most acting wins alongside Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for Hacks and The Diplomat respectively. Other British success came from Rhys's Widow's Bay co-star Kate O'Flynn, who won best supporting comedy actress, while Rhea Seehorn earned her first Emmy for Pluribus and The Pitt was named best drama. The night also featured a tribute to Dolly Parton and a humanitarian award for Michael J Fox.
