Jeff Garlin has said his previously undiagnosed bipolar disorder contributed to the behaviour and emotional difficulties surrounding his departure from *The Goldbergs*. Wendi McLendon-Covey, his co-star, disputed his account, saying she, the cast, crew, writers and executives remember events differently.

Garlin played Murray Goldberg from the sitcom’s 2013 premiere until leaving during its ninth season in 2021, following complaints about inappropriate verbal conduct, unwanted physical contact and an uncomfortable workplace. He denied deliberately harassing anyone, while the show later used filmed footage and stand-ins before writing his character out and revealing Murray had died off-screen.
