‘We’re Trying to Bet Big on Human Artistry’: Spotify’s Sam Duboff Talks AI Initiatives

Billboard · 3 hours ago

Spotify executive Sam Duboff said the company wants to develop artificial-intelligence music tools that support artists rather than compete with or replace them. Speaking during a visit to Australia, he said the country’s emerging approach to AI — centred on copyright, consent and payment — broadly matches Spotify’s position, and argued that licensed AI products could help existing artists’ careers.

Australia’s prime minister, Anthony Albanese, recently pledged stronger copyright protections and proposed an Office of AI to develop standards and licensing arrangements. Spotify has announced partnerships with Universal Music Group and Merlin for authorised AI remixes and covers by participating artists, planned as a paid add-on for premium users; it also plans to introduce an “AI Persona” label for AI-generated artists from mid-September, excluding their music from personalised recommendations.

  • Spotify says AI music tools should support, not replace, artists.
  • Australia’s proposed AI rules stress consent, payment and copyright.
  • Spotify is pursuing licensed AI remixes and labelling AI-generated artists.
