‘Werwulf,’ ‘Cliff Booth,’ ‘The Odyssey’ and More Costume Designers Show Exclusive Sketches From the Year’s Biggest Movies
Costume designers behind several major films have shared sketches and production details showing how clothing can express character and story. Their work ranges from historically informed outfits to elaborate practical effects, with some productions requiring thousands of designs.
For “The Odyssey”, Ellen Mirojnick created more than 5,300 designs; Penelope’s simple early dresses give way to a striking blue, armour-like gown. Marci Rodgers made more than 3,000 looks for “Michael” and recreated Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” outfit, including a jacket inspired by one belonging to his mother. In “Wicker”, Alexander Skarsgård’s wicker-like costume used 50 3D-printed appliances and took 18 months to develop; “Sense and Sensibility” uses muted mourning clothes to reflect the Dashwood family’s grief.
