“We’ve seen how close you can get”: How studio closures pushed Suzerain’s maker to create two new DLCs and a turn-based strategy spinoff

Rock Paper Shotgun · 2 months ago

Torpor Games, the studio behind the political strategy game Suzerain, has announced three new projects set in the same universe: two DLCs and a turn-based strategy spin-off. Co-founder Ata Sergey Nowak said the shift was driven not just by creative ambition but by the need to protect the studio in a harsh games industry, where closures have shown how vulnerable small teams can be. The move matters because it marks a significant expansion for a studio that had previously worked slowly, one project at a time, and suggests Suzerain has grown from a cult hit into a platform Torpor can build a broader business around.

The expansion follows the strong performance of Kingdom of Rizia, Suzerain’s first DLC, which lifted concurrent player numbers from about 1,000 at the original game’s launch peak to 3,400. That success helped Torpor secure investment late last year from Sisu Game Ventures, 1Up Ventures and Krafton. The first newly announced project, Suzerain Stories: The Neutral Lens, is a smaller narrative DLC due later this year in which players take the role of journalist Ilias Morris, balancing editorial choices and limited resources while covering events across the continent; it will be followed by Wars of Suzerain, a turn-based strategy game, ahead of Torpor’s next main title, The Conformist.
