Yorkshire and Leicestershire shared an evenly balanced, weather-shortened opening day in their important County Championship Division One match at Scarborough. James Wharton’s unbeaten 70 steadied Yorkshire after early wickets, but Leicestershire struck back late on to leave the hosts 144-5 when rain and bad light ended play.

Josh Davey took 2-22 as Yorkshire lost Adam Lyth and Will Luxton inside four overs, before Wharton and Sam Whiteman added 115 for the third wicket. Whiteman fell for 49 and Jonny Bairstow was among three later wickets as Leicestershire exploited helpful conditions; Yorkshire began the round joint fifth, 17 points above second-bottom Leicestershire and 27 behind leaders Nottinghamshire.
