Wildlife photographer Martin England, 64, captured a series of charming images of a woodmouse balancing on toadstools and mushrooms as it stretched to reach food in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. The photographs show the mouse adopting dancer-like poses, with one front limb gripping a plant while it steadies itself on tiptoe, and have drawn attention for their whimsical, almost human-like quality.

England said he laid out food near an area where he knew the woodmice were active, then waited for them to explore naturally, noting that the animals are notably curious and investigate their surroundings thoroughly. He described one image as resembling a mouse "playing the drums" as it stood with its front paws on two toadstools, while another looked like a ballerina en pointe. He said this was his first time photographing woodmice and found it challenging given how small and fast-moving they are.
