Johnson has credited Steve Reeves, a 1950s bodybuilder and actor who achieved prominence in sword-and-sandal adventure films, as his primary influence. When Johnson secured the lead role in a 2014 Hercules remake directed by Brett Ratner, he explicitly aimed to produce what he called the "definitive" interpretation of the character, drawing inspiration from Reeves' acclaimed 1958 version.
