The 74-year-old, a legendary figure at the club, had already served two interim spells during a turbulent campaign, and attention now turns to what a full season under his charge might look like heading into the new Scottish Premiership campaign, which begins with a home match against Dundee on 3 August.

Celtic finished last term on 82 points, their lowest total as champions in a full season since 2017-18, but O'Neill's own record during his 23 league games in interim charge was far stronger, averaging around 2.6 points per game, a rate that would project to roughly 99 points over a full 38-game season and echoes his title-winning tallies from the early 2000s. The club has also strengthened in attack, signing striker Kasper Hogh for a club-record fee alongside forward Camilo Duran, easing some fan frustration over a previously quiet transfer window, while O'Neill retains his backroom team of Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus and has hinted at tactical changes, including potentially playing Hogh and Duran together up front.
