The LiDAR scanner found on certain iPhone models is a depth-sensing sensor that helps the device measure how far away nearby surfaces and objects are, enabling features such as room scanning, augmented reality and improved low-light photography. Unlike a standard camera, it does not appear as a dedicated app or settings toggle; instead, compatible iOS features and third-party apps call on it automatically whenever depth information is needed, making it an easily overlooked but useful piece of hardware.

Apple introduced the LiDAR Scanner with the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max in 2020, and it has remained exclusive to Pro-tier iPhones through to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, while standard, mini, Plus and Air models go without it. It also features on every iPad Pro since March 2020. Practical uses include the Measure app for approximate object and height measurements, Apple's RoomPlan framework for creating 3D models of interiors, ARKit-based augmented reality placement, faster low-light autofocus and Night mode portraits, and Detection Mode in the Magnifier app, which offers accessibility support by identifying nearby people, doors and furniture through sound, speech or haptic feedback.
