What potential Bezos deal would mean for Liverpool

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is part of a consortium in advanced talks to buy a 30% stake in Liverpool FC, in what would be his first confirmed sports investment. Despite Bezos's vast personal wealth, Liverpool supporters are approaching the news cautiously, wary after the damaging Tom Hicks and George Gillett ownership era, and with little known so far about the consortium's plans or long-term intentions.

The deal would value Liverpool at £4.5bn, 13 times the £300m current owners Fenway Sports Group paid in 2010, generating FSG about £1.35bn while letting them retain control, mirroring a strategy used by Manchester City's ownership group. Experts note that under Premier League Squad Cost Ratio rules, the investment would not necessarily translate into greater transfer spending, since such funds are tied to commercial revenue rather than owner wealth. Bezos, worth roughly $257bn, also owns Blue Origin, Nash Holdings, the Washington Post and AI firm Prometheus, and recently sold Amazon shares worth around £3.1bn, more than double the consortium's reported offer for the Liverpool stake.
