A retired Philadelphia fireman and Vietnam veteran, George Barr, 75, is facing a murder charge after allegedly shooting dead his builder, Salis Hanrahan, a British national of Irish traveller descent, following a dispute over money at Barr's home. The shooting on 8 July 2026 came after tensions escalated between the two men, leaving building work on Barr's house unfinished and putting a spotlight on the traveller building crews who work across the US, with Hanrahan reportedly linked to a group now being investigated by the FBI over alleged fraud.

Barr, recently widowed and living alone, had lived in the same Philadelphia house for around 45 years and had hired Hanrahan to fit vinyl cladding to its exterior. The confrontation that preceded the shooting centred on payment for the work, and the cladding remains only half-completed. Barr is now in custody, while reporting by the Mail's US correspondent examines Hanrahan's alleged links to a wider network of travelling builders accused of running fraudulent schemes, which is said to be under FBI scrutiny.
