What was the first concert at Red Rocks?
The first concert at Red Rocks was a brass band performance on 31 May 1906, decades before the venue became a celebrated rock amphitheatre. Pietro Satriano led 25 musicians on a wooden platform at the site’s opening, showing how the natural sandstone gathering place began hosting organised performances.
John Walker later promoted the rocks’ acoustics, and Denver bought the site in 1927; the amphitheatre officially opened in 1941. The Beatles became the first major rock band to play there on 26 August 1964, performing to about 7,000 people in a venue built for around 9,000, with the high altitude leaving the band short of breath.
