What’s Driving Spanish TV? Spanish Drama Originals on Platforms, Renewals and Crossover Genres

Variety ·

Spanish fiction is expanding at home and maintaining a strong international position, according to a GECA report presented at Mipcom. The research attributes the boom partly to creators taking risks, crossing genre boundaries, reworking established intellectual property and developing series that can return for further seasons.

Spain ranked seventh among countries for global fiction premieres in the first half of 2026, with 30 titles and a 5.2% share of the total. Spanish premieres rose from 40 in 2021 to 73 in 2025, while the first half of 2026 saw 30 releases, compared with 33 a year earlier; 24 more were planned for the rest of the year. Drama accounted for half of first-half releases, ahead of comedy and dramedy, and nine new seasons were released, including further instalments of Netflix’s “Alfa Males”.

Spanish television drama is made by broadcasters and production companies for domestic and international audiences. Streaming platforms such as Netflix also commission and distribute Spanish-language series, while industry research tracks how many new series and seasons are released.

The sector’s growth reflects creators’ experiments with genres and adaptations of familiar stories. Series designed to continue across seasons can give producers and platforms a longer-running title, while drama, comedy and dramedy appeal to different audiences.

The figures offer a way to compare Spain’s output with other countries and track how it has changed over time. Spanish series reaching viewers abroad can also raise the profile of the country’s television industry.
