What’s the intended difficulty for Gears of War: E-Day? “I can tell you right now, it’s Hardcore” says The Coalition creative director

Eurogamer · 2 hours ago

The Coalition’s creative director, Matt Searcy, says Hardcore is the intended difficulty for *Gears of War: E-Day*. The choice reflects the series’ emphasis on brutal combat and tactical decisions: players should feel challenged, with cover, weapons and enemy combinations shaping how they approach each fight.

The campaign offers four settings—Casual, Normal, Hardcore and Insane—and defaults to Normal, although the developers play on Hardcore. Searcy says the higher settings make combat more of a strategic puzzle, and co-op players can choose different difficulties because damage and health are balanced for each player. The game also includes limited “down but not out” chances to help make tough encounters feel fair.

  • Hardcore is the developers’ intended way to play.
  • The game defaults to Normal and has four campaign difficulties.
  • Co-op players can choose separate difficulty settings.
