The disruption, first reported by affected users on social media platforms X and Threads, left people locked out of their accounts with a message stating their activity was being checked against the platform's Terms of Service, with results promised within 24 hours. Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that it is working to restore access, though the incident highlights how even a small-scale technical fault can affect large numbers of people given WhatsApp's vast user base.

A Meta spokesperson said the company is "always working to stay ahead of those trying to abuse our service" and acknowledged that legitimate accounts are sometimes wrongly banned, adding that affected accounts have now had action taken to restore them. WhatsApp has more than three billion monthly active users worldwide, meaning even a proportionally minor glitch can disrupt thousands of people's work and communications. Meta did not disclose which regions were affected or what specifically caused the accounts to be flagged for review.
