Where are Wales internationals really made?

BBC Sport ·

Tracing the pathways of Wales’ last 100 rugby debutants shows that producing internationals is a shared effort across local clubs, schools, academies and professional teams, sometimes in different countries. The findings offer context for debate about the future of Welsh professional rugby and show why a player’s birthplace or current club alone does not reveal where they developed.

Of the 100 players, 76 were born in Wales, but 78 had their formative rugby education there up to age 16. Cardiff’s area accounted for 30, the Ospreys area 20, the Scarlets area 17, the Dragons area 10 and North Wales one. Later development paths included 70 players in Wales and 24 in England; 74 made their first fully professional appearance for a Welsh club, while some players, including Dafydd Jenkins, broke through in England.

In short

  • Most recent Wales debutants learned rugby in Wales.
  • Their development often crossed regional and national boundaries.
  • 74 made their first professional appearance for a Welsh club.
