Microsoft prioritises Windows 11 quality as Windows 12 launch remains uncertain
Microsoft is expected to continue developing Windows 11 rather than launch Windows 12 next year, as it tries to address complaints about the operating system’s reliability, performance and excess features. Sources say the company is prioritising quality for a major Windows 11 release planned for 2027, though whether it will adopt Windows 12 branding remains unclear.
The release, known as Windows 11 version 27H2, is expected to replace or upgrade major parts of the operating system, unlike the smaller enablement updates in 2025 and 2026. Microsoft is also preparing new default wallpapers to replace Bloom, with designs tailored to different editions and uses, due to be previewed at Ignite and rolled out from early January. The article also cites memory changes intended to help PCs with 8GB of RAM keep up to 2GB more active data in memory.
In short
- Windows 12 may not arrive next year.
- Microsoft is preparing a major Windows 11 update for 2027.
- New wallpapers and performance work are also planned.
