Tampa, Charleston and Des Moines airports are due to become the first participants in TSA Gold+, a US programme that shifts airport security screening to private contractors while the Transportation Security Administration retains oversight. The change matters because it could introduce newer screening technology and reduce disruption during federal government shutdowns, but it has prompted concerns about security standards and jobs.

Des Moines is expected to switch in January 2027, Charleston in February and Tampa in May. The programme expands the existing Screening Partnership Program, already used at 20 US airports, by allowing contractors to manage screening equipment as well as staff; TSA says federal standards will remain in force, while the union representing TSA officers has warned of risks to public safety and the workforce.
