T Rex spent a remarkable 30 weeks in the UK top ten during 1971, a year widely regarded as one of the finest in popular music history. The band's chart dominance came as glam rock reached its peak, with frontman Marc Bolan's group embodying the flamboyant new movement while other landmark albums by artists such as Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell and Carole King were also released.

The band's 30 weeks in the top ten were built across three singles: "Hot Love" reached number one on release in February and stayed in the top ten for ten weeks; "Get It On" also hit number one in July and spent eight weeks in the top ten; and "Jeepster" peaked at number two but spent nine weeks in the top ten. These singles helped build momentum for T Rex's seminal album Electric Warrior, which crystallised the glam rock sound and is cited as a strong contender for the greatest album ever made.
