Deadline's specialty box office preview looks at the weekend's smaller theatrical releases going up against the wide-release blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The headline counter-programme is Gregg Araki's raunchy comedy I Want Your Sex, starring Olivia Wilde as a dominatrix artist and Cooper Hoffman as her muse, which is opening in around 700 US cinemas after strong festival buzz.

The film, from Magnolia Pictures, premiered at Sundance and holds a 91% "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, having played roughly two dozen US festivals and toured with promotional tie-ins including Grindr and FEELD. Elsewhere in specialty releases, Janus Films is expanding Kiyoshi Kurosawa's The Samurai And The Prisoner (95% on Rotten Tomatoes, nearly $10m grossed in Japan) with the director making rare New York appearances; IFC is re-releasing Richard Linklater's Boyhood on 110 screens; and several smaller titles are opening in limited release, including Jimmy (about a young James Baldwin), the environmental documentary A Paradise Lost, and a documentary about New York's owl Flaco, Wild Inside.
