White House Has Spent More Than $440,000 on Pro-Trump TV Ads Paid for by U.S. Government; Administration Defends ‘Unapologetically American’ Spots and Denies They’re Campaign Ads

Variety · 1 hour ago

The Trump administration has begun airing television advertisements funded by U.S. taxpayers, which have prompted criticism from lawmakers across the political spectrum. The spots, costing at least $443,000, feature President Trump promoting his administration's policy achievements and asserting that "America will never be a communist country," raising concerns about using government funds for what some argue resembles campaign advertising, particularly with midterm elections scheduled for November.

The initial advertisement began airing on Wednesday on Fox News and Newsmax, featuring claims about record tax cuts, manufacturing revival, and law-and-order initiatives. The White House has defended the ads as legitimate public service announcements comparable to those run by previous administrations of both parties, whilst critics including Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin have alleged they violate the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from engaging in partisan political activities. Republican Senator Thom Tillis characterised the ads as "inappropriate," whilst a musician whose track was used in one advertisement has disputed whether permission was granted for its use.
