Florida state lawmaker Angie Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has defeated establishment-backed candidate Alexander Vindman in the Democratic primary for a Florida Senate seat, winning by more than ten percentage points despite being vastly outspent. The result marks another instance of a DSA-aligned candidate unseating the Democratic Party's preferred pick, intensifying debate over the party's direction and adding to a string of socialist primary victories that has unsettled establishment figures.

Nixon, a progressive activist, overcame a funding disadvantage reported to be around $16 million against Vindman, a retired US Air Force officer. She recently drew attention in the Florida Legislature for disrupting a vote on a Governor Ron DeSantis-backed redistricting bill by shouting through a bullhorn. Nixon will now go on to face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in the general election.
