‘Who Is Still Alive’ Trailer: Watermelon Pictures Sets U.S. Theatrical Release For Swiss Oscar Entry
Watermelon Pictures will release the documentary *Who Is Still Alive* in US cinemas from 27 November. Directed by Nicolas Wadimoff, the film is Switzerland’s entry for the 2027 Oscars and follows nine former Gaza residents now living as refugees across the Middle East and Europe, reflecting on displacement and whether they can return.
The film uses white lines on a black floor to represent Gaza as the participants recount their former lives, survival, loss and abandoned hopes. It premiered at Venice Days in 2025 and has since screened at festivals including Locarno, Hot Docs and Thessaloniki. It will open in New York and Los Angeles, expand to 10 other markets on 4 December, and Wadimoff is due to attend US screenings and question-and-answer sessions.
In short
- Switzerland’s 2027 Oscar entry opens in US cinemas on 27 November.
- The documentary follows nine displaced former Gaza residents.
- It expands to 10 more markets on 4 December.
Explained simply
Gaza is a Palestinian territory on the eastern Mediterranean, where repeated conflict and restrictions have forced many people to leave their homes. Those who flee may live as refugees in nearby countries or further afield, often facing uncertainty about whether they can return.
Nicolas Wadimoff is a Swiss filmmaker, and Watermelon Pictures is the US distributor bringing his documentary to cinemas. The film follows nine people who left Gaza and now live across the Middle East and Europe, using their accounts to explore displacement, loss and hopes for the future.
Switzerland selects one film each year as its candidate for the international feature film category at the Academy Awards, commonly called the Oscars. The selection brings attention to a story from outside the US film industry, while the film’s cinema release makes it available to American audiences.
