Who Is That Guy Singing ‘Lost Boys’ With Phoebe Bridgers on TV?

Rolling Stone · 2 months ago

On 15 July, Phoebe Bridgers returned to The Tonight Show to perform a stripped-back version of "Lost Boys," joined onstage by an unassuming 70-something man in a baseball cap who turned out to be Dan Reeder, a German-based folk singer-songwriter, visual artist and instrument maker with a devoted cult following. His appearance introduced many viewers to a musician who has quietly become a favourite among prominent artists despite rarely touring or seeking the spotlight.

Reeder has released albums since 2004 on the late John Prine's Oh Boy Records, after mailing in a demo cassette unprompted, and is known for turning simple or crude lines into unexpectedly profound songs. He has picked up admirers including Bridgers, whose band boygenius covered his song "Stay Down, Man" in 2023, as well as Jack Antonoff, Jason Isbell and Whitmer Thomas. Following a 2026 live album recorded with his daughter Peggy Reeder, he is preparing for a full American tour in 2027, including a show at New York's Town Hall.
