Far Out ·

‘You Oughta Know’, released in 1995 on Alanis Morissette’s *Jagged Little Pill*, paired her raw, confrontational vocal with a backing band that included two members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The song became a career-defining hit and won Morissette two Grammy Awards.

Flea played bass and Dave Navarro guitar, with Benmont Tench on organ and Matt Laug on drums. Morissette and producer Glen Ballard wrote the song in late 1994; Flea and Navarro were invited to improvise from the vocal rather than follow guide tracks. Ballard later recalled that Morissette’s first late-night vocal take became the final recording.
