Who was the original drummer for Crosby, Stills and Nash?
Dallas Taylor was the original drummer for Crosby, Stills and Nash, playing on the group’s 1969 debut and later with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Although Stephen Stills received much of the credit for shaping the recordings, Taylor said his drumming brought heart and groove to the music, and he was part of the group from its early days through landmark performances such as Woodstock.
When Neil Young joined, his name was added to the band’s, while Taylor was left out of the title and became what the group called “the mystery guy”. He continued working with Stills, but drug and alcohol problems derailed his music career; after getting clean, he became a counsellor at a Los Angeles rehabilitation clinic. Taylor died in 2015.
In short

Explained simply
Crosby, Stills and Nash was a folk-rock group formed in 1968 by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, musicians who had already made names in other bands. Their close harmonies and acoustic sound helped make their 1969 debut album a landmark recording of the era.
Dallas Taylor played drums on that album and stayed with the group as it performed at major events including Woodstock. When Neil Young joined, the group became Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, while Taylor’s name was not included in the band’s title.
Taylor later worked with Stills, but problems with drugs and alcohol disrupted his music career. After becoming sober, he worked as a counsellor at a Los Angeles rehabilitation clinic; he died in 2015.
