Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged closer ties with the European Union, including allowing young people to live, work and study on either side of the Atlantic. Many Canadians interviewed welcomed the prospect, seeing it as a way to expand opportunities and strengthen links with Europe amid worsening tensions with the United States.

However, “associate member” status does not currently exist in the EU and would require approval from all 27 member states, potentially taking years. Supporters also mentioned easier travel, work permits, university study and property ownership, while Canada’s heavy reliance on the US—up to 72% of its exports—has increased interest in broadening its economic and political relationships.
