Oasis ended their 1996 Knebworth performances with ‘I Am the Walrus’, reflecting the Gallagher brothers’ deep admiration for The Beatles. Although songs such as ‘Live Forever’ or ‘Champagne Supernova’ might have seemed more obvious finales, the Beatles cover had become a familiar and popular part of Oasis’s live shows.

The band had performed ‘I Am the Walrus’ more than 320 times during their 18-year career, mainly as an encore between 1994 and 1996. Its appearance at Knebworth, where Oasis played to approximately 250,000 people across two shows, was therefore less an unusual tribute than a continuation of their established setlist tradition and their long-standing musical connection to The Beatles.
