FCC restrictions block Davolink from launching new Minion routers in the US

Engadget ·

The FCC’s restrictions on newly authorised foreign-made routers also affect Davolink’s Minion-shaped Kevin and Bob models. The two existing products can still be sold in the US because they were authorised before the ban, but Davolink has no exemption to introduce new models, including a possible Wi-Fi 7 version.

The FCC added foreign-produced routers to its Covered List on 23 March, following a national security determination, blocking new authorisations needed for US sales. Kevin is a 9.6-inch tri-band Wi-Fi 6E router rated at up to 5.4 Gbps, while Bob is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 model rated at 1.77 Gbps. Existing routers can receive certain security and compatibility updates under a waiver through at least 1 January 2029; Davolink’s support beyond 2028 is therefore uncertain unless the waiver becomes a permanent rule or the deadline changes.

In short

  • Kevin and Bob can still be sold in the US.
  • Davolink cannot currently introduce new router models there.
  • The update waiver runs through at least 1 January 2029.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Supporters of the restriction argue that routers are critical gateways into homes and businesses, so limiting new approvals for foreign-produced models can reduce exposure to security risks identified by the national security determination. They may see the measure as a precaution that protects users and gives regulators time to assess products before they enter the market, while allowing previously authorised models to remain available and receive updates for now.

The case against

Critics argue that a broad restriction based on where routers are produced can exclude products without evidence that each model is unsafe, reducing consumer choice and competition. They may also worry that uncertain approval and update rules will discourage investment and leave owners of existing devices unsure how long support will continue, making targeted security reviews a fairer approach.
