In a recent Variety interview, the 23-year-old singer sidestepped a question about why she avoids commenting on Trump and MAGA, instead saying it should be "pretty obvious" what she supports through the causes she backs, a response that only intensified scrutiny rather than settling it.

McRae points to her backing of organisations such as the Trevor Project and the Global Fund for Women as evidence of her values, but sceptics highlight her 2025 hit collaboration with country star Morgan Wallen, "What I Want", and her rumoured relationship with NHL player Jack Hughes as harder to reconcile. Wallen, who had a 2021 controversy over using a racial slur, remains hugely popular, and the song gave McRae her first Number One single, though she has said she never met him in person.
