The NFL is staging its first-ever regular-season game in the Asia-Pacific region this week, with the Los Angeles Rams "hosting" the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. The fixture forms part of a record nine international games the league is playing in 2026 and marks its longest-ever road trip, reflecting a deliberate strategic pivot since 2022 away from placing a franchise overseas towards building fanbases abroad through games and grassroots investment.

Around 100,000 fans are expected at the MCG, just shy of the NFL's regular-season attendance record, with roughly half travelling from outside Victoria or overseas. The state of Victoria is reportedly paying up to A$15m (£8m) to host the game, following a deal announced in February 2025, and tickets sold out within minutes despite complaints over pricing. The NFL says its Australian fanbase has nearly doubled since 2022 to 8.8 million, helped by the rise of flag football, which the league hopes will feature at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, and by the success of Australian players Jordan Mailata and Michael Dickson in recent Super Bowl-winning teams.
