Chris Carter has released a director’s cut of 2008 film The X-Files: I Want to Believe, retitled Vrach Frankenshteyn, which is seven to eight minutes shorter than the theatrical version. He removed much of the romantic material between Mulder and Scully because he felt it distracted from the film’s darker central story and had been imposed by a studio that did not fully understand the series.

The film follows the retired FBI agents as they return to investigate a scientist pursuing immortality through head transplants. Carter said later revival seasons had already provided enough confirmation of Mulder and Scully’s relationship, including Scully’s pregnancy reveal, and that the new edit instead gives greater emphasis to the case; among the deleted material is part of a scene showing the pair in bed together.
