At San Diego Comic-Con, "Widow's Bay" creator Katie Dippold revealed that Stephen Root's character Wyck was not part of the show's original pilot script. She explained that the earliest version began life as a spec script for "Parks and Recreation", written while she was in that NBC sitcom's writers' room between 2009 and 2012, and it contained no equivalent character to Wyck.

Speaking during Apple TV's Hall H panel, Dippold joked "burn every copy" about the earlier draft, prompting Root to reassure her with "I love you." The revelation came as Dippold reflected on the show's success following its acclaimed first season, which earned seven Emmy nominations, including an Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series nod for Root. Apple TV has since renewed "Widow's Bay" for a second season and signed Dippold to an overall deal, with the Season 1 finale now available to stream.
