Oklahoma woman charged after husband shot dead amid abuse claims
Prosecutors say Salomi Derena Ochsner, 63, told investigators she shot her husband, Jeff, after he allegedly hit her repeatedly the previous evening and she feared he would kill her. She was arrested and charged with first-degree murder; the allegations have not been tested in court.
Ochsner called law enforcement on Friday morning, and officers found Jeff’s body at about 7am at their rural home near Chattanooga, Oklahoma. She is being held on $200,000 bond and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing conference on 19 January 2027. Court records also show she filed for divorce in 2005, but the case was later dismissed.
In short
- Ochsner is charged with first-degree murder.
- She says she feared her husband would kill her.
- Her next court hearing is scheduled for January 2027.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The prosecution can argue that a killing must be investigated and judged under the law, with the charge reflecting the gravity of a reported intentional shooting. The abuse allegations and Ochsner’s account of fearing for her life deserve careful consideration, but they remain untested, and the court must assess the evidence, including whether the shooting was legally justified.
The case against
The defence can argue that, if Ochsner was repeatedly assaulted and reasonably believed her husband was about to kill her, shooting him may have been necessary self-defence rather than murder. Her account should be assessed in light of the alleged abuse and the circumstances she faced, without treating the charge itself as proof of guilt.
