Wildlife and access boost planned for city park

BBC Science ·

Coventry City Council is set to begin work improving access and wildlife habitats at Longford Nature Park, a small reserve recognised by the council as being of high importance to biodiversity in the city. The scheme aims to make the site easier for people to enjoy while protecting the species already living there, reflecting the council's wider emphasis on the health and wellbeing benefits of green spaces.

The improvements will include a new boardwalk over muddy sections of the park, litter-picking and the creation of shallow wetland habitats, funded through Section 106 money paid by developers for major local building projects. The work will be carried out by the council's urban ranger team alongside volunteers from the Friends of Longford Park. Longford Nature Park sits opposite the larger Longford Park, which also serves as a public path linking the Coventry Building Society Arena and the Coventry Canal.

Explained simply

Coventry City Council is planning work at Longford Nature Park, a small but ecologically significant reserve in the city, to improve both public access and conditions for wildlife. The project reflects the council's broader approach of treating green spaces as important for both nature conservation and residents' health and wellbeing.

Planned changes include a boardwalk over boggy ground, general litter clearance and new shallow wetland areas to support local species. The work will be carried out by the council's own urban ranger team together with volunteers from the Friends of Longford Park, and is being paid for using Section 106 funds – money that property developers are required to contribute towards local community and environmental projects when building major developments.

Longford Nature Park is a separate, smaller site next to the larger Longford Park, which is also used as a walking route connecting the Coventry Building Society Arena to the Coventry Canal, giving the area a wider role in local pedestrian access as well as conservation.
