Willie Nelson has publicly condemned the expansion of data centres across the United States, warning that such developments threaten rural communities like his hometown of Abbott, Texas, south of Dallas, where he still owns farmland. In a social media statement, the 93-year-old country music icon described the facilities as "loud, water thieving, light polluting" and said rural America's strength lies in "generations of people, open spaces, local businesses, and a connection to the land" rather than industrial infrastructure. It is not clear whether Nelson was referring to a specific proposed data centre, though numerous projects have been announced for the wider Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Nelson's intervention reflects broader public unease over the artificial intelligence-driven data centre boom: a Gallup poll from May found seven in ten Americans oppose such facilities being built in their local area, with 48% strongly opposed and just 7% strongly in favour. The statement continues Nelson's long record of activism, including his support for immigrants and decades of advocacy through Farm Aid, which he co-founded to support family farmers. The remarks come as Nelson remains creatively active, with a new book, The Last Leaf, due for publication on 10 November via Penguin Press, his sixth book this decade, following his most recent album, Dream Chaser, released in late May, and an ongoing summer amphitheatre tour.
