Wind Waker 2 was in development before Zelda lead Eiji Aonuma was told Toon Link “alienated” American teenagers, so we got Twilight Princess instead
Former Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has said that Nintendo began developing a sequel to The Wind Waker before market research suggested Toon Link’s stylised appearance was putting off American teenage players. The feedback contributed to a change in direction, resulting in the more realistic-looking The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess instead.
The decision illustrates how Nintendo weighed audience perceptions alongside creative plans during the GameCube era. Twilight Princess launched for GameCube and Wii in 2006, while a direct Wind Waker follow-up was never released; later Zelda games returned to the series’ more cartoon-like visual approach.
- Wind Waker 2 was reportedly started before Nintendo changed direction.
- Research suggested Toon Link alienated some American teenagers.
- The shift led to the darker-looking Twilight Princess.
