With World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard had to reconnect with what made WoW great in the first place
Developing story first seen 2 hours ago
New details show Blizzard’s *World of Warcraft: Forever* is being designed to expand the original game while retaining the feel of its 2004 era. Lead encounter designer Michael Nuthals says the team had to unlearn habits from modern WoW and revisit the original game’s design principles, as fans have different ideas about what an expanded Classic experience should be.
The project adds more than 1,000 quests, new areas including Mount Hyjal, dungeons and raids, rebalanced classes and items, and a new lighting system. It also introduces the Skyborne Elves, a new race. Blizzard says Forever’s beta was the largest in WoW history, though access required a premium bundle costing at least $60.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Forever could answer a long-standing fan request by adding substantial new adventures while preserving the original world’s sense of exploration and challenge. Replaying and studying Classic content suggests Blizzard is taking those design principles seriously, and new quests, areas and raids could give the game fresh life without requiring players to leave Azeroth.
The case against
A major expansion risks changing the very experience that makes Classic distinctive, especially if new content or rebalanced classes feel more like modern WoW than the original game. The premium bundle required for beta access may also make it harder for some players to judge whether Blizzard has captured Classic’s appeal, while the scale of the additions raises the stakes for getting that balance right.
Explained simply
World of Warcraft is an online role-playing game set in Azeroth, where players create characters, complete quests and explore a shared fantasy world. Its original version, now known as Classic, has simpler systems and different challenges from the modern game, and many players have asked for new content that builds on that older style.
Blizzard Entertainment makes the game, which has received regular expansions over the years. The challenge with a Classic-era expansion is to add places and activities while keeping the feel that draws players to the original; the choices affect how both new and returning players experience the game.
