A father and daughter died after getting into difficulty in the sea off Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, prompting a major emergency response and an outpouring of sympathy from the local community. The pair, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 60s from Doncaster, were reportedly on holiday when they were pulled from the water on Sunday evening; both were pronounced dead at the scene, and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Devon and Cornwall Police, along with the RNLI and coastguard, were called to the scene at about 21:45 BST, and a cordon was put in place before later being lifted. Officers are also appealing for help finding an orange or peach-coloured handbag believed to have been carried into the water by the woman, saying it holds sentimental items the family hopes to recover. Newquay's mayor, Drew Creek, described the incident as "awful" and said the town was "feeling sombre", while a resident who watched events unfold via the beach's webcam warned that conditions at Fistral, a renowned surfing beach, can change rapidly.
