Accounts from Gabriela reveal that the driver appeared indifferent immediately after the crash, reportedly asking for a lighter for a cigarette rather than showing concern, while Cristina screamed in Spanish that her legs were destroyed as she lay pinned beneath the vehicle. The driver, whose identity has not been released, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and is facing several felony charges.

Gabriela and the family friend who was also at the table have since recovered and left hospital, but Cristina remains in physical therapy at a rehabilitation centre following three surgeries that ultimately failed to save her legs.
