Three men have been arrested following allegations of gang-raping a woman during a migrant boat crossing to Lanzarote on 16 September. The assault was reported by the victim after Spanish coastguard vessels rescued the vessel, and a witness from the boat corroborated her account. The incident underscores serious safety risks faced by migrants undertaking dangerous sea crossings.

The inflatable boat departed from Tan-Tan in southwestern Morocco and encountered severe difficulties during its five-day journey, resulting in an estimated 14 to 17 deaths. Spanish coastguard vessels rescued 68 people from the vessel, which was located approximately 77 nautical miles from Lanzarote. The three suspects, aged 21, 25, and 30, have been remanded in custody pending investigation by the National Police's Family and Women's Assistance Unit, with an investigating judge to decide whether to recommend formal charges.
