Sheffield is set to begin a £1.42 million government-funded road safety scheme in January 2027 to improve the A625 Ecclesall Road, which has been identified as one of 27 urban roads across the UK with particularly high collision rates. The improvements are considered significant as they represent a comprehensive approach to reducing accidents and enhancing pedestrian safety on a major arterial route through the city.

The scheme will include introducing a new 20mph speed limit between Pear Street and Hunters Bar roundabout, extending the existing 30mph limit to Abbey Lane, and installing average speed cameras and vehicle-activated signs. Additional measures comprise junction redesigns, central road markings to separate traffic flows, new and upgraded pedestrian crossings, and detailed design work that has already been completed. The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority has also made a conditional offer of £5.5 million for further improvements on the A61 Chesterfield Road, with additional safety work planned for Greenhill Main Road, Greenhill Avenue, and enhanced bus stop accessibility on Scarsdale Road.
