Work starts on key Supertram junction – BBC
Developed over time first seen 2 months ago
Work has begun to renew Sheffield Supertram’s Delta junction near Fitzalan Square and Park Square roundabout. The upgrade is significant because every tram service uses the junction, and it is intended to improve reliability, safety and the network’s long-term resilience.
The £3.5 million project will replace worn track, points, signalling equipment and pedestrian crossings at a junction used by more than 440 trams daily. It is expected to make journeys smoother and extend the junction’s life by about 30 years, though services will be disrupted during the works.

Sheffield Supertram is a light-rail network serving Sheffield and nearby areas. Its trams run on tracks through city-centre streets as well as on separate routes, linking places such as the railway station, Meadowhall, Hillsborough and Halfway.
The Delta junction is a central section of track near Fitzalan Square and Park Square, where routes join and split. Because every Supertram service passes through it, problems there can affect trams across the whole network.
Track junctions use movable rails, known as points, and signalling to guide vehicles safely between lines. These parts wear over time, so replacement work is needed to maintain safe, reliable services, but it can also require temporary changes to tram routes and timetables.
