The World Health Organisation has warned that West Nile virus is spreading across parts of Europe, including destinations popular with British holidaymakers. The mosquito-borne infection can cause serious neurological illness in a small proportion of cases, making prevention and awareness important during the summer travel season.

The virus is usually transmitted through mosquito bites and many infected people develop no symptoms or only a mild flu-like illness. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe disease, so travellers are advised to reduce mosquito exposure by using repellent, covering skin and avoiding bites where possible.
