Xbox Says More Exclusives Are Coming But Tells Players Not to ‘Overly Fixate on Single-Player’ Games
Xbox executives have again tried to clarify the company's exclusivity strategy, insisting that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are not the only titles being kept off PlayStation. Chief strategy officer Matthew Ball and chief content officer Matt Booty made the comments in an interview with GamesRadar, following weeks of confused messaging since Microsoft confirmed last month that both games would remain console exclusives with no timed deals in place. The clarification matters because it signals Xbox is doubling down on exclusives as a growth strategy even as it continues releasing other flagship titles, such as Halo and Fable, on PS5.
Booty said "large live-service titles" will generally be multiplatform, but cautioned fans not to assume all single-player games will stay Xbox-exclusive, calling it "a good rule of thumb" rather than a fixed policy. He added that Microsoft evaluates exclusivity on a "case-by-case basis" across its portfolio of more than 20 billion-dollar franchises, while Ball said the company has an internal "framework" for these decisions that it plans to explain more clearly to players. Both executives argued that exclusive content is essential to building a platform, drawing comparisons to cable, streaming and broadcast media.
