Ars Technica reviewed the Xtracycle Swoop ASM, a $4,500 steel-framed cargo e-bike that uses a Shimano system capable of shifting gears automatically on the rider's behalf. The idea builds on the fact that modern e-bikes already track cadence, torque and speed, giving the electronics enough information to choose an optimal gear without input from the rider, though the reviewer found the automatic shifting itself less smooth than manual changes, even though the system is genuinely effective at deciding when to shift.

The Swoop ASM is a long-tail cargo bike with a "mullet" wheel setup (a larger front tyre and smaller rear one) and front suspension, and it can be ridden with the automatic shifting switched off if preferred. Weighing just under 70lb (31kg), it features a double-telescoping seat post and an adjustable handlebar clamp to accommodate different rider sizes, plus protective covers for the rear wheel and chain, a sturdy kickstand, and a highly customisable rear rack that can be fitted with passenger seating, bags or other cargo accessories.
