Netflix has confirmed full details of "Parasyte: Tamiya," a new live-action series returning director Yeon Sang-ho to the franchise he revitalised with "Parasyte: The Grey," set to stream in 2027. The project matters because its predecessor was a genuine global hit, spending four weeks on Netflix's Global Top 10 Non-English TV list and topping the chart in 34 countries after its 2024 release, giving Netflix strong incentive to expand the universe with a starrier, more specific focus.
The series stars Shioli Kutsuna ("Deadpool 2", "Sanctuary") as Ryoko Tamiya, portraying the character across three states drawn from the original manga: the human teacher whose body is taken over, the parasite once it assumes control, and the being that gradually learns from and comes to question coexisting with humanity rather than simply dominating it. Yeon developed the story and co-wrote the script with Ryu Yong-jae, with Wowpoint producing, while directing duties are shared by Kakimoto Kensaku ("Glass Heart") and Nakagawa Kazuhiro ("Double", "Bullet Train Explosion"), a pairing Yeon said was deliberate given their contrasting styles. Both Yeon and Kutsuna described Tamiya's internal struggle over her own nature as the emotional core of the series, with Netflix Japan executive Sato Yoshihiro framing the show around questions of what defines humanity and whether coexistence with different beings is possible.
