‘You Can See Everything’ Ruled Ineligible for DGA Feature Prize, Will Compete Only in Documentary Category

Variety ·

The Directors Guild of America has ruled that Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s *You Can See Everything* is ineligible for its theatrical feature directing award and can compete only in the documentary category. The decision removes the film from a major Oscar precursor: the DGA feature winner has gone on to win the best director Oscar in all but eight years since 1949.

A24 and awards strategists had hoped the film’s blend of documentary and staged narrative might qualify it in both categories, particularly as Amanda Seyfried is seeking Oscar consideration for supporting actress. The 174-minute film opened on 16 October and centres on Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes; it will also be submitted for several Oscar categories, including picture, director and acting. A24 is discussing classification with other awards bodies, while the DGA nominations are due in January.

In short

  • DGA limits the film to its documentary directing category.
  • It cannot compete for the guild’s feature directing prize.
  • A24 is seeking consideration across multiple Oscar categories.
