ICANN is reviewing more than 1,600 applications for new generic top-level domains, potentially expanding the internet’s address system with endings such as .slop, .borg, .therapy and .hype. The process matters because successful applicants would operate these domain registries, shaping which new internet addresses become commercially available.

The Link Freedom Group alone has applied for 316 domain endings, including .con, .token, .moon and AI-related terms such as .agentic and .AGI. Each application costs at least $227,000, with additional scrutiny for higher-risk names; ICANN expects to publish administratively valid applications in September or October, but new domains are unlikely to be sold before late 2027.
